在中华人民共和国成立之前，历代统治阶级推行民族歧视和民族压迫政策，以至后来把许多历史上早已公认的民族都说成是汉族的宗支，致使许多少数民族隐瞒、更改了自己的族称，中国的民族成份一直处于模糊不清的状态。中华人民共和国成立以后，党和国家实行民族平等政策，保障少数民族当家做主的权利，激发了少数民族的民族意识，长期被压迫的许多少数民族纷纷公开他们的民族成份，提出自己的族名。到1953年，汇总登记的民族名称有400多个。为了使我国各少数民族真正实现民族平等，充分享受民族平等和民族区域自治的权利，充分发挥各族人民的积极性、主动性，使他们的经济文化迅速发展，有必要在全国范围内进行民族识别。>>
少数民族人口分布
据2000年全国人口普查公报的统计，祖国大陆31个省、自治区、直辖市的人口总数为126583万人，其中汉族115940万人．占全国人口的91.59％，少数民族10643万人，占全国人口的8.41％。与1990年第四次人口普查相比，汉族人口增加了11692万人，增长了11.22.%，少数民族人口增加了1523万人，增长了16.70%。汉族人口占总人口的比重由91.99％下降为91.59％，各少数民族人口的比重由8．01％上升为8．41％。>>
