Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.

Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.

Now the American Automobile Association Foundation(基金会) for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.

Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.

Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.

Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

41. The passage mainly discusses _____________.

A. a new way of highway speed control

B. a new pattern for painting highways

C. a new way of training drivers

D. a new type of optical illusion

42. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that _______.

A. they should avoid speed-related hazards

B. they are driving in the wrong lane

C. they should slow down their speed

D. they are coming near to the speed limit

43. The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ____.

A. can keep drivers awake    B. can cut road accidents in half

C. will look more attractive   D. will have a longer effect on drivers

44. The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to ____.

A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas

B. change the road signs across the country

C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons

D. repeat the Japanese road patterns

45. What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?

A. They are suitable only on broad roads.

B. They are falling out of use in the United States.

C. They are ignored in a long period of time.

D. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.

2 Anger, a normal emotion, if not properly expressed, can be harmful to people's health. Doctors suggest that we learn to deal with anger in a calm and reasonable way.

As we know, getting angry not only does harm to one's health but also has a bad effect on the relationship between people. Sometimes expressing anger too strongly can lead to severe results.

However, in many cases, anger may be avoided if we can understand each other better. For instance, someone may have done something about which you are very angry, but in fact he/she meant no harm. So it is quite unnecessary for you to get angry. If someone does do some wrong, try to put yourself in his/her position and understand him/her. If you find it really necessary to express anger, try to do it in a calm, reasonable way. Remember losing your temper does good to neither you nor the other person.

阅读 In Europe, people hold the fork in the left hand and the knife in the right throughout the meal, a system that is generally agreed to be more efficient than the American zigzag(曲折的)method. Americans hold both the fork and the knife in their right hands throughout the meal, so they continually change their forks to the left hand when they have to cut their meat. It seems to be funny for the Europeans to see Americans busy changing their dinner sets, making a lot of noises.

A few explanations for this American style are as follows:

(1) Americans are practical and efficient. Since most of us are right-handed, it is reasonable to keep our working tools at all times in the right hand that can use them most efficiently.

(2) Americans, the master of the New World are rebels(叛逆者).They use the zigzag method to break the rules in the Old World and in this way they are thumbing their nose at Mother England. Americans are a restless kind. They do not like to sit in one spot for very long when dining.

(3) Forced to do so, they respond by “playing” with the silver.

Whatever the reason for the practice, it is now certainly as American as apple pie. Europeans recognize this and are quick to attack it as evidence of American innocence(无知)of form. Arguments against the zigzag method rest not only on grounds of efficiency but also on those of tradition. In Old World dining, the knife is held in the right hand continually because it can serve as an instant defense against the uninvited intruders(入侵者).However, such alertness(警觉) is out of place in the New World, as every American believes that this is the home of the brave. Americans juggle their silverware, perhaps, to show that they are not afraid and that one of them holding a fork is worth any number of them holding blades(刀).

26 Americans use _______ to hold their fork to pick up the salad.

A. the right hand                                 B. the left hand

C. both hands                                  D. either of the two hands

27. As the masters of the New World, Americans use a different cutting method from that in the Old World to _________________.

A. show their independence of Mother England

B. show their disrespect to Mother England

C. add a new tradition to those in Mother England

D. show off their creativeness to Mother England

28. In the sentence, the word “juggle” probably means ____________.

阅读In a few years, you might be able to speak Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, and English — and all at the same time. This sounds incredible, but Alex Waibel, a computer science professor at US's Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and Germany's University of Karlsruhe, announced last week that it may soon be reality. He and his team have invented software and hardware that could make it far easier for people who speak different languages to understand each other.

One application, called Lecture Translation, can easily translate a speech from one language into another. Current translation technologies typically limit speakers to certain topics or a limited vocabulary. Users also have to be trained how to use the programme.

Another prototype(雏形机) can send translations of a speech to different listeners depending on what language they speak. “It is like having a simultaneous translator right next to you but without disturbing the person next to you,” Waibel said.

Prefer to read? So-called Translation Glasses transcribe(转录) the translations on a tiny liquid-crystal(液晶) display(LCD) screen.

Then there’s the Muscle Translator. Electrodes capture the electrical signals from facial muscle movements made naturally when a person is mouthing words. The signals are then translated into speech. The electrodes could be replaced with wireless chips implanted in a person's face, according to researchers.

During a demonstration held last Thursday in CMU's Pittsburgh campus, a Chinese student named Stan Jou had 11 tiny electrodes attached to the muscles of his cheeks, neck and throat. Then he mouthed — without speaking aloud — a few words in Mandarin(普通话) to the audience. A few seconds later, the phrase was displayed on a computer screen and spoken out by the computer in English and Spanish: “Let me introduce our new prototype.”

This particular gadget(器械),when fully developed, might allow anyone to speak in any number of languages or, as Waibel put it, “to switch your mouth to a foreign language”. “The idea behind the university's prototypes is to create ‘good enough’ bridges for cross-cultural exchanges that are becoming more common in the world,” Waibel said.

With spontaneous(自发的) translators, foreign drivers in Germany could listen to traffic warnings on the radio, tourists in China could read all the signs and talk with local people, and leaders of different countries could have secret talks without any interpreters there.

41. Which of the following statements is not TRUE?

A. A lecture translation can translate what you said into other languages easily.

B. To help students learn foreign languages more easily.

C. To make people live in foreign countries more comfortably.

44. What can be inferred from the seventh paragraph?

A. The translator is so good that it can translate any language into the very language you need.

B. The translator is becoming more and more common in the world as a bridge.

Increased College Enrollment

On the whole, increased college enrollment is just like a double-edged sword, which has both benefits and potential shortcomings.

People who are in favor of the increased enrollment rate subscribe to the view that it not only relieves the high pressure on parents and students to some extent, but is also a suitable tool to raise the educational level in our country. What’s more, it can also help to cultivate more young labors with specialties.

On the contrary, there are also some people who are opposed to this policy, because they fear that it will lead to the shortage of teaching staff and educational facilities. Worse still, increased enrollment rate will intensify the already-fierce competition in job market.

In my point of view, this tendency should be continued, as we need more capable people to contribute to the fast-growing economy. But in the meantime, the government and universities ought to invest more to guarantee the quality of education.

2 Being passionate, honest and hard – working, a good student is always listening and learning.

Personally speaking, I strongly believe that honesty is of utmost importance among dozens of good qualities.

There is proverb that goes ‘Honesty is the best policy’ , and it seems as true as it was when first coined. The most important element in human relationships, whether business or personal, is trust.

Here is one of my secrets. I once lied to my parents because of my poor scores. Having known the real fact from teachers, they praised and encouraged me, showing their deep love. Later days, my conscience swallowed me, growing as I told lie in an effort to conceal my original deceit. I gave it up, and chose to be frank. Wow! It is better to stick to the truth! From then on, I have kept the following in my minds: If it is not true, don’t say it. If it is not right, don’t do it. Honesty is not the best policy, but also a principle, which is absolutely essential for the good and happy living of life.

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?

According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.

The study also found the effect is greater, the younger people learn a second language.

A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.

Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.______

“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” said the scientists.

It means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.

Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的),”he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”

The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of two and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.

………I think it is right people owe  the world food crisis to the climate change, the loss of farmland and the production of biofuels.  And it’s human activity that has punished humans by starving them.

There’s only one way to prevent this human disaster ,The World Food Crisis ,from going worse — following the government’s appeal of building a conservation-minded society.  Only in this way can we lead the development of world back to, not away from, the way of what NATURE works. Only in this way can we save ourselves in time..

Though still at school, we have our own ways to share the responsibility of building a conservation-minded society. We should waste no food, save every watt of power and every drop of water, and persuade people around to behave in the same way. If everyone starts to save what he used to waste, there’ll be hope to solve disasters like world food crisis, though there’s still a long way to go.

Why do men die earlier than women? The latest research makes it known that the reason could be that men’s hearts go into rapid decline when they reach middle age.

The largest study of the effects of ageing on the heart has found that women’s longevity may be linked to the fact that their hearts do not lose their pumping power with age.

“We have found that the power of the male heart falls by 20-25 percent between 18 and 70 years of age,” said the head of the study, David Goldspink of Liverpool John Moores University in the UK.

“Within the heart there are millions of cells that enable it to beat. Between the age of 20 and 70, one-third of those cells die and are not replaced in men,” said Goldspink. “This is part of the ageing process.”

What surprises scientists is that the female heart sees very little loss of these cells. A healthy 70-year-old woman’s heart could perform almost as well as a 20-year-old one’s.

“This gender difference might just explain why women live longer than men,” said Goldspink. They studied more than 250 healthy men and women between the ages of 18 and 80, focusing on healthy persons to remove the confusing influence of disease. “The team has yet to find why ageing takes a greater loss on the male heart,” said Goldspink.

The good news is that men can improve the health of their heart with regular exercise. Goldspink stressed that women also need regular exercise to prevent their leg muscles becoming smaller and weaker as they age.
